Did you know...
Established in 1994, and family owned and operated, Menai Pacific (Rock) Oysters are responsibly and sustainably harvested from the Menai Strait, near Y Felinheli (Port Dinorwic), Isle of Anglesey, Wales.

The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of shallow water of about 25km in length, that separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales. The Menai Strait has one of the fastest tidal ranges in the world, with unpredictable currents and whirlpools. The Menai Strait is one of the most trecherous waterways in Wales. Many boats have become stranded on rocks or sandbanks, or capsized over the years, with loss of life.

The Menai Strait is classified as a Special Area of Conservation.

In order to link Anglesey with Wales, Thomas Telford (a civil engineer) led the design of a suspension bridge over the Menai Strait, which had to allow for Royal Navy ships (30 metres tall) to pass under the deck of the bridge at high tide. In 1819, work started with the construction of the limestone towers on either side of the Menai Strait. In 1826, work on the Menai Suspension Bridge was completed, and it was officially opened on 30 January 1826. As the largest suspension bridge in the world, the span measured 176 metres (577 feet). In 1893, the entire wooden deck was replaced by a steel deck; and in 1938, the wrought iron chains were replaced by steel chains.

The Menai Suspension Bridge is only eight miles from the spectacular medieval Caernarfon Castle, which is a famous World Heritage Site.

Menai Pacific Oysters are featured on menus at top restaurants and oyster bars in the North West of Wales and in London. For example, Dylans's Restaurants, The Black Lion, and Bentley's Oyster Bar.
