West Mersea Wild Pacific Oysters (sometimes called Mersea Oysters or Colchester Oysters) are wild and sustainably fished from traditional oyster beds in inter-tidal waters of the River Blackwater Estuary, Mersea Island, Colchester, Essex, England.

West Mersea Wild Pacific Oysters are distinctive in appearance with ripple-like fluted and thick shells.

Oysters have been harvested from waters around Mersea Island since Roman times to date.

Freshest oysters possible
West Mersea Wild Pacific Oysters develop from seed to market size in creeks off the River Blackwater near West Mersea, Mersea Island (takes 2 to 3 years).

Once harvested, these oysters are cleaned, purified in natural seawater from the River Blackwater, and packed live to order in boxes at the oyster farm (Monday and Wednesday) for next day courier delivery to our clients' addresses in mainland UK (Tuesday and Thursday).

Store and consume
For the freshest and best flavour, store Pacific Oysters in the fridge and consume within 4-5 days from delivery. Oysters can be consumed raw or cooked.

West Mersea oyster fishery covers an area of inter-tidal waters at the River Blackwater Estuary, near the small town of West Mersea, Mersea Island, Colchester, Essex, England.

 

West Mersea contains areas of inter-tidal mudflats, wide areas of saltmarsh, shingle banks and sand flats. The foreshore area is designated under the Essex Estuaries Special Area of Conservation, Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protected Area and is located within the Colne Ramsar site.

 

Oysters have been fished from the Blackwater Estuary at Mersea Island, near the town of Colchester since Roman times. It is well documented that Romans consumed vast quantities of oysters, and tonnes of oyster shells have been excavated from ancient sites in and around Colchester. The town of Colchester was the capital of Roman Britain, and remains the oldest recorded town in Britain.

 

West Mersea Wild Pacific Oysters are featured on menus at a top oyster bars, restaurants and hotels in the UK.
