Porlock Pacific Oysters are cultivated and sustainably harvested by hand in inter-tidal waters at Porlock Bay, Somerset, England.

In the 1830's, Native Oysters were fished from Porlock Bay. Then, in the 1890's, Native Oysters were over-fished and believed to be extinct. In 2013, Porlock Parish Council established an Oyster Community Project to introduce Pacific Oysters in Porlock Bay. Since 2014 to date, Porlock Pacific Oysters have been harvested from Porlock Bay for the local market.

Freshest oysters possible
Porlock Pacific Oysters develop from seed to market size at the River Avon (near Bantham, Devon) and then at waters at Porlock Bay (takes about 3 years).

Once harvested from Porlock Bay, these oysters are cleaned, purified in natural seawater from Poole Bay, and packed live to order in boxes at the oyster farm (Monday to Thursday) for next day courier delivery to our clients' addresses in mainland UK (Tuesday to Friday).

Store and consume
For the freshest and best flavour, store Pacific Oysters in the fridge and consume within 4-5 days from delivery. Oysters can be consumed raw or cooked.

A map dated 1710 shows an oyster bed in Porlock Bay, Sommerset, England.

 

From the 1830's Porlock Native Oysters were known to be fished from oyster beds in Porlock Bay. In the 1890's, Porlock Native Oysters were overfished and are belived to be extinct.

 

In 2013, Porlock Parish Council established an Oyster Community Project in an attempt to revive Porlock Oysters, as well as provide employment opportunities and promote tourism for the village of Porlock. In 2014, Porlock Bay Oysters (a Community Interest Company) was established, and after several successful trials, Porlock Pacific Oysters became established in Porlock Bay. In July 2019, the Porlock Oyster business was sold to a local investment company who works with the current team and provides local employment for the community of Porlock.

 

Porlock Pacific Oysters develop from seed to market size at the Porlock Bay Oysters' nursery bed at River Avon (near the coastal village of Bantham, South Devon, England) and then at waters at Porlock Bay, near the coastal village of Porlock, Somerset, England. Once harvested from Porlock Bay, Porlock Pacific Oysters are sold to local restuarants in the area.

 

Porlock Bay is located on the Bristol Channel between Hulstone Point and Porlock Weir. Porlock Bay lies within the Exmoor National Park and the coastline forms part of the South West Coast Path.

 

The village of Porlock adjoins the Porlock Ridge and Saltmarsh Nature Reserve, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

 

Porlock Pacific Oysters are featured on menus at local restaurants in the village of Porlock and the town of Taunton, Somerset, England.
